Human Gross Anatomy: What to Expect

Image
Utica University organizes the class schedule so that we take human gross anatomy the summer before the fall semester of our first year. It is an intense, six week course laying out the foundations of the human body from head to toe. Here on campus, we have a human gross anatomy lab. Each summer, the first year students in the PT program are provided 6 donor bodies. It's so awesome to have the opportunity to learn with a real human body and I personally am so grateful for the people who donated their bodies for us to learn and aid us in someday providing PT care to those who need it. The course typically runs from mid-June to the end of July. There are lectures in the mornings, 5 days a week with a 3 hour lab to follow. There are tutors (2nd and 3rd year DPT students) who have previously gone through the course that are there to help with any questions, provide practice questions, run through muscles in the lab with you, and so much more. This human gross anatomy course is challeng...

Transition from Undergrad to Grad School

Image
Hello everyone! This post is going to be all about what to expect during your first year at PT school. I’m halfway through my first year and have definitely seen some big differences from undergrad. One of the biggest (and I’d say most expected) differences is the workload. It’s much more in-depth work and there’s extra pressure there because these are the things that we will have to know for our careers and for the rest of our lives as PT’s. So keeping this in mind, it’s important to remind yourself regularly that you’re working so hard to be the best PT you can be in the future. Although the workload is a lot, everyone is helping you work toward your goals. Your classmates are helping you reach your goals, the professors are there to help, the students in cohorts above you are always helping out, and so much more. In undergrad, it may seem at times that you are always in competition with those around you. You're all trying to get into programs that have very limited seats and you...

More Great Characteristics of UU’s DPT Program

Image
Hi readers! For this post, I wanted to talk a little more about some of the many things that I love about Utica University’s physical therapy program (one post just wasn't enough)! The college is very involved with the Utica community, so there are so many opportunities to get involved in volunteer work! One big event that happens here in Utica is the Boilermaker! It’s a big, annual 15K that takes place here in the city. Some of the PT students go and give the runners massages after they finish the race. It’s so much fun for the whole community! Another amazing thing that I personally love about Utica’s program is the pro bono clinic that we have the opportunity to volunteer at called Utica R.I.S.E. R.I.S.E stands for Rehabilitation and Integrative Services. The clinic provides care to disadvantaged people in the greater Utica area. First year students and second year students go and work together at the clinic. This is a great way to give back to the community and good practice ...

Noteworthy Characteristics of UU’s DPT Program

Image
Hey ya’ll! For this blog, I’m going to be talking about some of the special things that I personally find great about Utica University’s program compared to many other programs. Most PT programs are organized in a similar manner, but they all definitely have little things that are specific to each one. One thing that I found to be a great perk to UU’s program is how they set up the curriculum. The first course that we take here after entering the program is human gross anatomy. This course is taken the summer before your first fall semester. I really liked that it was set up like this because it was the only class I was taking at that time and I could really focus on learning that material. As a PT, this information is the basis of our career, so I really liked that I was able to put my all into that course and just focus on that one class.  Another thing that I really like about Utica University’s PT program is that the first year students work closely with the second year ...
