Hi readers! When I started interviewing for physical therapy school, it was just about this time last year. I remember being super nervous, feeling like I wasn't sure what to say to make me stand out more than my fellow applicants. I met with one of my professors a couple times to do mock interviews, my friends pretended to be interviewers for me so I could practice, and I even reached out to the graduate admissions offices to be clear on their expectations for prospective students into their PT program.

When I did my interviews last year, most schools were offering either an in-person interview or a virtual interview via zoom. One thing that I really loved about Utica University was that they were one of the schools that were offering in-person interviews. I personally felt that I could better portray my character and who I am in-person much better than I could online. For UU’s interview, they had four faculty members attend to ask questions. This seems as though it would be very intimidating, 4 on 1, but these members of the faculty were very welcoming and it genuinely felt like I was just having a conversation with them.

Interviews for most doctor of physical therapy programs will ask very similar questions. Through my experiences, I noticed that some of the main topics that many schools want to know about are why you're passionate about the field/why you chose that particular program at their particular school, and they will want to get to know you on a deeper level, more than just what your transcript and GPA says about you. Like I mentioned in a previous post, just about everyone applying to programs like physical therapy programs will typically have just about the same, high GPA. The interview is a chance for the school to get to know you, but also for you to get a feel for that school. Although I have gone to Utica University for my undergraduate degree, I didn't really know many of the physical therapy program faculty. However, as soon as I entered the interviewing room, I immediately felt welcomed and could see myself working with the faculty for the next 3 years here.

Like I’ve said before, it is important to find a school that is not only going to be a place where you will learn about PT, but also somewhere that fits you as a person. A place where you can see yourself living for the next few years, a place where there’s support and encouragement at all levels, and most importantly, a place where you are happy. Although PT school is a lot of work, I am so very grateful to say that I am happy with my decision and that I chose a place like Utica University to call my home for the next 3 years. Interviewing can be scary, but when you find your match, you will know!

If you have any more questions about tips regarding the interview process or more about the way Utica University sets up their interviews, email me at mmlazore@utica.edu.

Goodbye for now, folks☺
